John was an excellent field geologist, as I soon learned when, as a very green PhD student at the Unversity of Birmingham, I did my first field trip to my study area in Assynt, NW Scotland. The group picture was taken at Achmelvich on that occasion. I couldn't have asked for a better supervisor, especially as my university background was in chemistry, rather than geology. A particularly memorable time was our field trip to East Greenland in the summer of 1967, as shown in the other two photos. We used two small boats and soon discovered that neither made very good icebreakers.
